What are obsessive-compulsive disorders?
Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) are associated with obsessive thoughts and compulsive behavior patterns. It’s a mental health condition that, in severe cases, can cause problems in your personal life, work, or school. OCD is also associated with anxiety and other common mental health conditions. If problematic, visit Sound Mind Holistic Services for an evaluation.

What are the different types of OCD?
Some of the different types of obsessive-compulsive disorders include:

  • Skin-picking disorder:
inability to stop picking at your skin
  • Body dysmorphic disorder:
constant worry about flaws in your appearance
  • Hoarding disorder:
distress and an inability to get rid of things
  • Hair-pulling disorder:
inability to stop pulling out your hair

The symptoms of OCD include intrusive or obsessive thought patterns, constant fears, and compulsions (repetitive behaviors). You might fear dirt or germs, wash your hands constantly, or have extreme orderliness within your home.

You may constantly worry about forgetting to turn off your stove or lock the doors in your home or have repetitive behavior patterns with the exact same routine day after day.

Along with OCD, you might experience anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, or other common mental health challenges.

What are the risk factors for obsessive-compulsive disorders?
Common risk factors for developing obsessive-compulsive disorders include a family history of OCD, learned behaviors from other family members, and stressful or traumatic life events. However, the exact cause of OCD isn’t always clear.

How does my provider diagnose and treat OCD?
Josephine can diagnose OCD after discussing your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle habits. She asks about your thoughts, behaviors, moods, emotions, and more during an in-person or telehealth mental health evaluation.

Josephine then tailors a treatment best suited to your needs. She offers medication management to reduce bothersome symptoms and psychotherapy (talk therapy) to help you learn ways to manage symptoms better and cope with your condition. You might meet with her in person or virtually over the phone once weekly or as needed for psychotherapy.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP) are common forms of psychotherapy that are highly effective for treating OCD and reducing symptoms.

To find relief from obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), schedule an in-person or telehealth appointment at Sound Mind Holistic Services by phone or online today.
