What are substance use disorders?
Substance use disorders are mental health issues that arise due to improper use of harmful substances or the ability to stop using such substances, despite wanting to.

You might have an addiction to nicotine, alcohol, pain medicines, or other addictive drugs that cause harm to your physical and mental health. See Josephine at the first sign of an addiction that negatively affects your life.

What are the symptoms of substance use disorders?
The common symptoms of substance use disorders are:

  • Inability to stop using harmful substances
  • Using more and more of such substances
  • Withdrawal symptoms when quitting
  • Feeling high
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Feeling numb
  • Mood swings
  • Problems at work or school

Substance use disorders may negatively affect interpersonal relationships with friends, family, or coworkers.

Without treatment, common withdrawal symptoms upon quitting may include anxiety, sweating, seizures, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

What are the risk factors for substance use disorders?
The risk factors for developing substance use disorders include:

  • Family history of substance misuse
  • Trying highly addictive substances
  • Using addictive substances at an early age
  • Peer pressure
  • Lack of a social support network
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Certain personality traits

You might begin using addictive substances in response to past trauma or negative life experiences, such as divorce, job loss, abuse, financial struggles, or a death in your family.

How does my provider diagnose substance use disorders?
To diagnose substance use disorders, Josephine completes a comprehensive mental health evaluation. She asks questions about your lifestyle habits, thoughts, moods, emotions, and more before tailoring an effective treatment.

How are substance use disorders treated?
Sound Mind Holistic Services offers medication management and psychotherapy (talk therapy) to help you break an addiction.

The practice provides cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), other forms of therapy, and medications that reduce withdrawal symptoms, making it easier to stop using harmful substances. You might attend in-person or virtual telehealth therapy individually or in a group with peers.

Josephine follows up with you to ensure your treatment works effectively and helps you learn ways to manage and recover from an addiction.

It’s important to also eat nutritious foods, get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, and practice stress-reduction strategies to avoid relapsing.
